A tiny baby entered the world on Sunday, and she will call me “Minnie.”  It was one of the most sacred moments of my life.  There is nothing that compares to the joy in my heart to be able to share the story of the day my first granddaughter was born!

{nesting}

Something in our hearts told us all day Saturday that the baby we had so long awaited would be born on Sunday.  Call it a “sixth sense” or “intuition.”  Call it what you will, but it was as real as anything I’ve ever experienced, and there was nothing any of us could do to shake it.

I remember as a much younger, expectant mommy, the nesting phase that occurred the day before each of my baby’s births.  Now, I’m not sure if there is any evidence out there to support it, but I’m pretty sure Minnies-to-be can experience nesting.  I swear I did!  Heck, I even think Grumps and Aunt Emmy were nesting Saturday night.

Emily and I had played with our new Silhouette cutting machine all day, until she left for a photo shoot, and I switched gears and created a beautiful centerpiece. (I’ll write about those things soon, but I’ve GOTTA tell you about this baby!)  The whole time we were crafting, though, we were planning for our upcoming trip.  It was a little bizarre.

{the call}

On Sunday morning (around 12:30 a.m.), after making sure all our bags were packed, the house was tidy, and the coffee was ready to brew bright and early, we headed for bed.  Emily even spent the night at our house (complete with her packed bag).  I should clarify that we had not heard a word from San Antonio at this point.  It was just something we felt.

At 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, I was awakened by an unfamiliar ringtone (evidently I got sidetracked when I was looking for a new ringtone and landed on a random one).  It was Eric!

He asked what we were doing, to which I replied, “Waiting on this call!”  He chuckled a little and described the events that had led them to the hospital.  Caitlin was dilated to 5 cm and was resting quietly after her epidural.  We KNEW it!  That baby was about to be here!

{road trip}

After we all got dressed and ready, it was time to load the pickup.  We had just a little bit of stuff…

Our bags are packed. We’re ready to go!

Grumps is all prepped for the baby…or the apocalypse!

We headed south at about 7:30!  Next stop…San Antonio (after McDonald’s for breakfast and a pit stop in Junction)!  The hardest part was that deadzone between Winters and Kerrville with NO CELL SERVICE!!!

{hurry up and wait}

We arrived in San Antonio around noon and the hospital at 12:30 after we picked up some sandwiches for us and the baby daddy at Jersey Mike’s (delicious, btw).

Eric came out to see us and eat his sandwich.  After we all got to go love on Caitlin for a minute, we settled in on the exceptionally uncomfortable waiting room furniture for our wait; Todd watching racing videos on YouTube with his headphones…

Then we posed for a photo taken by a random stranger who was waiting on someone else’s baby in the next area…

Finally, at around 3:30, we got a text from Eric saying that she was fully dilated and would start pushing once the doctor was out of the OR!!!  OMG!  It was almost time!

{she’s here!}

At 4:29 p.m., a text came through from Eric with photos attached. “I can’t even handle this, guys!” was followed by this:

Langley Denise Lewis

I can honestly say that I had no idea what she even looked like for about 10 minutes after opening this photo because my eyes were so clouded with tears!  That face!  Those lips!  That HAIR!!!

Langley Denise Lewis took her first breath at 4:14 p.m. on Sunday, October 16, 2016.  Her middle name, Denise, is in honor of the coolest, orneriest, most giving and loving lady any of our family has ever known – my grandma.  Langley weighed 7 pounds, 1.3 ounces and is 19 1/4″ long and is absolutely perfect!

{becoming minnie}

Being a momma has been the greatest joy of my life…until I became Minnie.  I’ve always heard people say, “You just think being a parent is good, but then you have grandkids.”  I knew there must be something to that, but until I saw my grown baby boy with the new little life he had created with his amazing little wife, I had no idea!  There just are no words.

My Baby has a Baby

Using the DNA of Eric and Caitlin, God created the most perfectly beautiful little angel!  She even still smells like Heaven!  Her skin is as soft as silk, and that velvet black hair!  Oh my!  I’m missing her so much just writing about her!

When I held her for the first time, I thought I would just die with my heart bursting out of my chest!  Check this out:

Full Arms. Fuller Heart!

Now, I’m gonna just tell you that under any other circumstances, the photo above would have been deleted. I look like I’m about to let out a big ol’ Goofy “Ahyuck!”  I don’t care, though!  This photo summarizes exactly how smitten I was…and still am!

{new mommy and daddy}

My beautiful, patient, and loving daughter-in-law is truly a gift from above!  I’ve said it so many times, and I do not want to sound cliche’, but if I could have hand-picked the perfect wife for my son, I would have chosen her…over and over again!

One of a momma’s greatest prayers for her children is that they will find the spouse God created for them – someone who loves the Lord and loves their spouse.  Caitlin is all that and more.  She is already the best little mommy, and I know she is perfect for Langley!

Eric is my firstborn.  My only son.  Seeing him hold that tiny baby girl so comfortably in his big, strong arms fills up my heart!

{grumps and aunt emmy}

When a baby is born, so is a new Grumps and Aunt Emmy.  I can’t hog up all the fun here!  These two couldn’t get enough of that little angel, either!

{parting is such sweet sorrow}

We lavished just as much love on Langley and her parents as was humanly possible in a 24 hour period, but real life and responsibilities awaited all of us back home.  Monday, just after 2:00, we loaded back up in the pickup and headed north, leaving huge chunks of our hearts in San Antonio.

There is so much I would like to write about in this post, but it’s getting really late, and I should get some sleep.  I’M GOING BACK TOMORROW TO STAY WITH THEM FOR FOUR DAYS!!!  I can’t properly love on that baby if I’m exhausted!  Besides, I’ll have opportunities to share soooo much more!  That little ladybug and her Minnie have some really sweet memories to make over the next few decades!

Blessings!
