Minnie – Because “Grandmother” is for Old Ladies

Grandmother Names… My grandkids will call me “Minnie.”  “Grandmother” is for old ladies, plus it’s way too formal.  (I apologize in advance to any Grandmother out there who I may have offended!  It’s a lovely name, but just not me!) Grandmother Names…

My grandkids will call me “Minnie.”  “Grandmother” is for old ladies, plus it’s way too formal.  (I apologize in advance to any Grandmother out there who I may have offended!  It’s a lovely name, but just not me!) As weird as it may seem (I guess it would seem weirder if we were talking about anyone but me), I’ve had my “grandma” name picked out since before I ever had kids.  No kidding!

When Todd and I first met, his nephews, who also became mine after we married, couldn’t say my name. They called me “Minnie.”  Later, my dear friend Terri’s daughter expanded upon it by calling me “Minnie Oowee.”  She was a little more formal, adding my last name.  They broke my heart when they mastered pronouncing their S’s and my name changed to Missy.  That was when I knew I would someday teach my grandchildren to call me Minnie.  Someday…

FaceTime Surprise

On Super Bowl Sunday that “someday” would be here in about 8 months. Eric requested to FaceTime with me as I was walking into a mall in Dallas. This was the first thing I saw:

Looks like my baby boy is gonna be a daddy - and I'm going to be a Minnie!

I’m going to be a grandmother named Minnie!

Well, needless to say, Emily and I cried like babies right there in Dillards!  We did what any woman would do in such a situation. We went straight to the baby section (while still on the call) and started shopping!

Counting Down

Here we are – 7 months later and just counting down the days (37) until our little granddaughter makes her debut into this world.  Eeeeeeeeek!   I’m already sooooo in love with that little girl!  She’s about as big as a honeydew melon and lives in her mommy’s tummy.  She has kicked against my hand from within her safe little cocoon, and I’ve felt her hiccup.  Although I’ve never seen her face, and she is yet to breathe her first breath in this world, she has me wrapped all around her tiny finger.  I simply cannot wait to look into her eyes and tell her face-to-face how much I love her; how I’ve longed and prayed for her.  I cannot wait until the first time I hear her call me “Minnie!”
